Mustangs heading to OFSAA

bpsports niagara smchs 03062024The Saint Michael Mustangs boys hockey team is heading back to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA championships for the first time since 2019.

Competing at the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association championships Tuesday at Hamilton, the Mustangs defeated Ancaster 3-2 in overtime in the semifinals and then recorded a 5-1 victory over the A.N. Myer Marauders in the championship game.

Hunting goals in Fort Erie

bpsportsniagara 01242024 SMCHSHunter Coley has come a long way in a short period of time with the Fort Erie Meteors.

The 17-year-old forward was an associated player with the team the last two seasons and has quickly made his mark in his first year in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The Grade 12 student at Saint Michael Catholic High School is fourth on the team in scoring with 17 goals and 32 points in 34 games after spending last season with the Southern Admirals U18 AAA squad.

Mustangs take care of Lynx

bpsportsniagara SMCHS 01102023Luka Dermott stole the show for the Saint Michael Mustangs Wednesday.

The 17-year-old, Grade 12 student poured in a game high 24 points to lead the Mustangs past the Saint Jean-de-Brebeuf Lynx 88-57 at Brebeuf in one of eight opening round games at the 67th Annual Welland Tribune Basketball Tournament.

“It’s good, it’s the best feeling, honestly,” Dermott said when asked about his performance. “It’s great for me to have success myself but it’s more important for our team to succeed.”

Fehr commits to Monmouth

bpsportsniagara SMCHS 11222023Ashlyn Fehr has made a meteoric rise in the sport of rowing.

The Grade 12 student at Saint Michael joined a learn to row program in the summer before starting Grade 10 and recently committed with NCAA Division 1 Monmouth on a rowing scholarship.

The 17-year-old was a competitive figure skater from the age of four and also a synchronized skater, winning a bronze medal at nationals in the latter with Burlington Nexxice in 2022, before trying rowing.
