Ideals, Values & Commitments

·     At Saint Michael Catholic High School, we are committed to creating a safe environment where students can learn about themselves and their world with a sense of security and freedom.  Students are taught to respect the rights, property and opinions of others.  The development of responsibility, within this framework, is essential to student growth.

·      We believe that all students can mature—spiritually, morally, socially, physically, emotionally and culturally within our “Christ-centered” community.

School History

In 1989, the Welland County Separate School Board added a second Catholic high school to the city of Niagara Falls.   Saint Paul Catholic High School had already been established in the north end of the city.  The new school was named Saint Michael Catholic in honour of the archangel Michael and its doors opened for the fall semester, September 1989.

The new Catholic high school was located at 6099 ValleyWay in Niagara Falls.  The building was the former Lord Elgin Vocational School, part of the Niagara District School system.  The building became available in 1989 and the Welland County Separate School Board saw the opportunity to open its much needed second Catholic school.  The first Principal of Saint Michael was Bill Walters assisted by his Vice-Principal Steve Cino and head of student services William Kislasko.  The school population was small at 250 students, however, in its first year Saint Michael only offered grade 9 and grade 10 programs.  The following year Grade 11 students graced the hallways and finally the 1991 -92 school year saw its first graduating class.

In 1993 William Vernooy became the second Principal of Saint Michael Catholic High School with Mario Ciccarelli assisting as Vice-Principal.  The school population had now surpassed 650 students and the anticipated growth was underway.  In the middle of the 1994 school year, John Crocco was appointed as the newest Mustang Principal.  Shortly after, Dan DiLorenzo joined the school as Vice-Principal.  It was during Mr. Crocco’s tenure as Principal that a formal proposal was put forward to the newly formed Niagara Catholic District School Board asking that a new Saint Michael Catholic High School be built.

By 1997 Paul Barchiesi became the fourth Principal of Saint Michael and his continued efforts in realizing a new building for the school finally became a reality.  In 2002 a ground breaking ceremony marked the construction of the new Saint Michael Catholic High School facility on McLeod Road.  By the spring of 2004 staff and students of Saint Michael packed their belongings and moved into Niagara’s newest state-of-the-art facility at 8699 McLeod Road.  A few years later Mr. Barchiesi retired and was replaced by Mario Ciccarelli.  Mr. Ciccarelli a former mustang returned and began proposing an expansion to the new high school which had already exceeded its maximum and hosted a backyard of classroom portables.  Before leaving to move into his new role as Superintendent of Education for the Niagara Catholic District School Board, Mr. Ciccarelli was informed that an approval for expansion had been granted.  In the fall of 2011 Jim Whittard became Principal of Saint Michael.  Mr. Whittard works diligently for the good of the students, staff and the Saint Michael community.  Mr. Whittard and the entire Saint Michael community now anxiously await plans for the expansion and the next step in the history of Saint Michael Catholic High School.

We are presently undergoing a 6.1 million dollar expansion to Saint Michael Catholic High School.  Ground breaking has taken place and construction will begin in earnest the first week of July. The new expansion will provide an additional 10-classrooms, including state-of-the-art improvements to culinary, technology, music and exercise departments. The expected completion of the new expansion will coincide with the 2014-2015 school year, which will also commemorate our 25th anniversary.  Our 25 anniversary reunion is scheduled for October 11, 2014.  For more information on the STM 25th anniversary, please check us out on facebook at STM25threunion, Twitter @saintmichaelCHS, or visit us at http://www.saintmichaelmustangs.
