Hunting goals in Fort Erie

bpsportsniagara 01242024 SMCHSHunter Coley has come a long way in a short period of time with the Fort Erie Meteors.

The 17-year-old forward was an associated player with the team the last two seasons and has quickly made his mark in his first year in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The Grade 12 student at Saint Michael Catholic High School is fourth on the team in scoring with 17 goals and 32 points in 34 games after spending last season with the Southern Admirals U18 AAA squad.

Mustangs take care of Lynx

bpsportsniagara SMCHS 01102023Luka Dermott stole the show for the Saint Michael Mustangs Wednesday.

The 17-year-old, Grade 12 student poured in a game high 24 points to lead the Mustangs past the Saint Jean-de-Brebeuf Lynx 88-57 at Brebeuf in one of eight opening round games at the 67th Annual Welland Tribune Basketball Tournament.

“It’s good, it’s the best feeling, honestly,” Dermott said when asked about his performance. “It’s great for me to have success myself but it’s more important for our team to succeed.”

Fehr commits to Monmouth

bpsportsniagara SMCHS 11222023Ashlyn Fehr has made a meteoric rise in the sport of rowing.

The Grade 12 student at Saint Michael joined a learn to row program in the summer before starting Grade 10 and recently committed with NCAA Division 1 Monmouth on a rowing scholarship.

The 17-year-old was a competitive figure skater from the age of four and also a synchronized skater, winning a bronze medal at nationals in the latter with Burlington Nexxice in 2022, before trying rowing.

Mustangs’ season ends in SOSSA semifinals

bpsportsniagara SMCHS 11152023The Saint Michael Mustangs got a look Wednesday afternoon at what it takes to be successful in the upper echelons of senior high school football.

The end result of a 37-0 loss to the Westmount Wildcats in the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association semifinals was disappointing but the team can learn and grow moving forward.

“It’s huge for the program,” Saint Michael lineman Jacob Shannon said. “The teams that we play in SOSSA are all top 10 in the province and we were top 50 in the Ontario high school rankings so just competing at this level is really good for our young guys. We have a very young team and it’s great for the guys coming up to get a taste for what it is.”

Mustangs roll into SOSSA

bpsportsniagara SMCHS 11092023The Saint Michael Mustangs traded sleep for a better chance at a championship, a choice that paid huge dividends Thursday.

The Mustangs topped the Blessed Trinity Thunder 25-23, 25-22, 26-24 in the Zone 2 senior boys volleyball AAA final at BT, avenging a loss to the Thunder in last year’s final.

Mustangs coach Pat Ricci was quick to point out how hard his charges worked for the title.

Mustangs advance to NCAA final and SOSSA semifinals

bpsportsniagara SMCHS 11022023The Saint Michael Mustangs senior football team can thank its defence for a 31-22 victory over the Blessed Trinity Thursday in the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior football semifinals at Kiwanis Field.

The defence forced seven turnovers and scored two touchdowns to send the Mustangs into next week’s championship game against the defending champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With the semifinal victory, Saint Michael also advanced to the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association semifinals no matter what happens in the league championship game.

Mustangs Win!

NCAA football roundup: BT, Irish, St. Mike’s, Phoenix winners

smchs bpsn 10072023Lukas Cuthbert had two rushing majors to power the Saint Michael Mustangs (2-1) to a 23-13 victory over the Saint Paul Patriots.

Also contributing to the win for the Mustangs were: Jake Salvatore with a TD catch from Austin Macrae; Max Marinas with a 20-yard field goal, a single and a convert; Connor Cavey with three sacks; and, Matthew Lim with two incredible catches to keep offensive drives alive.
